Media Relations Track
Completion of 120 total credits which include the following:
1. Completion of the 20-hour Fundamentals of Journalism course
2. Completion of the AP Stylebook and Code of Ethics test, including the Public Relations Society of America, Church Statement of Ethics, and Church Corporate Identity Package.
3. Completion of 30 hours of readings in public relations and media relations in coordination with the Certification Manager.
4. Completion of a 40-hour externship at an approved media relations office, or other public relations department or agency and a report on the experience submitted to the Certification Manager.
5. Completion of seminars, workshops, courses, or other approved learning opportunities totaling 30 hours. Skill areas include:
- Pitching stories to the local and national press
- Building relationships with media
- Managing media relations, delivery systems and editorial responsibilities
- Providing communication support to an organization and its various stakeholders. Customizing the message and choosing appropriate media conduits to reach audiences and stakeholders.
- Communicating during a crisis and creating the crisis communication plan.
- Utilizing new communication technologies for expanding the reach of the organization.
- Organizing news and information services delivery in a timely manner.
- Managing the media relations team.
- Training for spokespersonship, including media training for church administrators who will interact with the media.
- Assisting administrators in responding publicly in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Developing a communication media strategy for a particular geographic area, organization or initiative.
- Creating a media relations campaign.
- Creating various marketing and promotional materials, including branding and logos.
- Developing, training and educating media professionals within the organization.
- Learning news values and evergreen stories that media entities find attractive.
- Measuring the effectiveness of media relations initiatives and campaigns.
